Listen and Learn: AI Systems Process Speech Signals Like Human Brains

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems can process signals similar to how the brain interprets speech, potentially helping to explain how AI systems operate. Scientists used electrodes on participants’ heads to measure brain waves while they listened to a single syllable and compared that brain activity to an AI system trained to learn English, finding that the shapes were remarkably similar, which could aid in the development of increasingly powerful systems.

Researchers found that the signals produced by an AI system trained to learn English were remarkably similar to brain waves measured as participants listened to a single syllable, “bah,” in a study published recently in the journal Scientific Reports.

The team used a system of electrodes placed on participants’ heads to measure brain waves as they listened to the sound, then compared the brain activity to the signals produced by an AI system.

Understanding how and why AI systems provide the information they do is becoming essential as they become ingrained in daily life in fields ranging from healthcare to education.

Studying the waves in their raw form will help researchers understand and improve how these systems learn and increasingly come to mirror human cognition.

AI makes non-invasive mind-reading possible by turning thoughts into text: AI telepathy?

An AI-based decoder that can translate brain activity into a continuous stream of text has been developed, in a breakthrough that allows a person’s thoughts to be read non-invasively for the first time.

The decoder could reconstruct speech with uncanny accuracy while people listened to a story – or even silently imagined one – using only fMRI scan data. Previous language decoding systems have required surgical implants, and the latest advance raises the prospect of new ways to restore speech in patients struggling to communicate due to a stroke or motor neurone disease.

Dr Alexander Huth, a neuroscientist who led the work at the University of Texas at Austin, said: “We were kind of shocked that it works as well as it does. I’ve been working on this for 15 years … so it was shocking and exciting when it finally did work.”

How generative AI is building better antibodies 

At the height of the pandemic, researchers raced to develop some of the first effective treatments against COVID-19: antibody molecules isolated from the blood of people who had recovered from the disease.

Now, scientists have shown that generative artificial intelligence (AI) can provide a shortcut through some of this laborious process, suggesting sequences that boost the potency of antibodies against viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and ebolavirus. A study published last week in Nature Biotechnology1 is part of growing efforts to apply ‘neural networks’ similar to those behind the ChatGPT AI platform to antibody design.

Antibody drugs for diseases including breast cancer and rheumatoid arthritis bring in more than US$100 billion in worldwide sales each year. Researchers hope that generative AI — neural networks that can create text, images and other content on the basis of learnt patterns — will speed up development and help to unlock antibody drugs for targets that have resisted conventional design approaches.

“There’s intense interest in discovering and engineering antibodies, and how one makes antibodies better,” says Peter Kim, a biochemist at Stanford University in California, who co-led the Nature Biotechnology paper.

Expert Martin Ford, author of Rule of the Robots: How Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Everything tells BBC of 3 categories that are going to be relatively safe from being taken over by AI.

1. Jobs that are genuinely creative: That does not mean just “formulaic work or just rearranging things” but rather brainstorming ideas and creating something new.
